Oooooh how wonderfully off-kilter in blue!
Photographed in matching outfits, the girl on a stool viewing …? Lovely, nostalgic WW, Allyson.
What a lovely moody shot Allyson. I’m trying to figure out how you got the photo on to the same background as the dresses – however you did it, it works! I need more information – is this on a boat or …?
So I think I was leaving too much for the viewer to figure out with this shot. Alli, you were right that it’s on a boat. A ferry, actually, in the Hawaiian islands. The girl on the right is me, 6 years old. The woman is my mom. This candid shot would have been taken by my dad. In our WW group chat, we were talking about aprons I wore as a child, and then hand-embroidered aprons such as yours in this week’s WW photos, and that got me thinking about this old photo — or rather, this little Hawaiian-patterned dress similar to my mother’s. I didn’t know she’d kept my dress all these years, until after she died and my sister found it folded away in my mom’s bedroom. That dress is the background on which the photo rests.
I love the combination of memory and artifact, Allyson! And the landscape effect of the fabric makes the photo like a dream you could walk into.
I hope you’re framing this pic. The backdrop of dress and the story that goes with it is touching and beautiful. What a lovely memory. And that she kept the dress…
